Ulster Volunteer William James Cranston, son of William and Sarah Cranston, lived with his wife Mary Ann and child at 130 Boundary Street, Shankill Road, Belfast.

The 1911 Ireland Census has William living at 22 Argyle Street, Shankill Road, Belfast, with his grandmother, Mary Ann Ryan, 81 years, mother, Sarah, 49 years, occupation, Linen Yarn Spinner, and sister Letitia, 12 years. His occupation at this time is given as General Labourer.

William married Mary Ann Cranston, Nee Pollock, in August 1914.

He was a member of the West Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force.

William joined the Royal Army Medical Corps.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Forces.

William James Cranston was a Private in the 109th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps when he was Killed In Action on the 2nd of August 1917.

Sadly exactly 1 year to the day before Williams death, Mary and William lost their 14 month old son, John Patrick Cranston, on the 2nd of August 1916.

A local newspaper states.

Mrs Cranston, 130 Boundary Street, Belfast, has been informed that her husband, Private William James Cranston, R.A.M.C, was killed in action on the 2nd inst.

There are also memorial notices within his file.

Pension Application Forms show his father William, born 1860, as claimant.

His Soldiers Effects were also left to his father.

He received the British Victory Medal and British War Medal.

He is Remembered at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
