Herman Hewitt Henderson, son of William and Annie Henderson, lived at 44 Warkworth Street, Shankill Road, Belfast.

The 1901 English Census shows Herman, a 6 year old, living with his mother, father and 2 sisters, Alice and Agnes.

The 1911 Ireland Census has Herman's family living at 129 Durham Street, Belfast with his mother, father, noted as receiving an Army Pension, and 3 sisters, Alice, 15 years, a Seamstress, Agnes, 13 years, a Seamstress, Linda, 7 years.

However Herman himself was a soldier by this stage and is registered on the English 1911 Census ( China and Hong Kong ) as a 17 year old Drummer.

Herman joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Omagh, County Tyrone.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Forces on the 17th of March 1915.

Herman Hewitt Henderson was a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, when he was Killed In Action in the Dardanelles, Gallipoli, on the 2nd May 1915, aged 20 years

Belfast Men Killed In The East.

News of the rank and file of the 1st battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, killed in the shore operations at the Dardanelles last week, are now coming to hand, the next of kin having received notifications yesterday and today. There is, as will be seen from the appended names, a number of Belfast men among the victims.

Lance Corporal Herman H Henderson, 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 14th inst, was the only son of Sergeant W Henderson, 13th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles (Co. Down Volunteers) at present stationed at Clandeboye. Deceased had seven years service and came from India with his battalion. His sisters reside at 44 Warkworth Street, Belfast.

Local newspapers state that Herman had 7 years service at the time of his death, so this would mean that he was a Drummer from about the age of 13.
