The 1901 Ireland Census has Josephs family living at 112 Argyle Street, Belfast, with his father, occupation, General Labourer, his mother, occupation, House Keeper, and 2 sisters, Anne Eliza, 25 years, occupation, Mill Worker, Margaret Peel, 23 years, occupation, Linen Weaver.

The 1911 Ireland Census has Joseph living at 120 Argyle Street, Shankill Road, Belfast with his wife, Sarah, 29 years, occupation, Flax Spinner, and 2 children, Margaret, 2 years, and William, only months old. Josephs occupation is given as a Shipyard Labourer.

Joseph was employed at Queens Island before enlisting.

He had married Sarah Reid, Nee Livingston, on the 31st August 1907 and they went on to have 3 children, Margaret McDonald Reid, born 23rd June 1908, William Nelson, 27th July 1910, and Sarah, 14th June 1913.

He was a member of the West Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force.

Joseph joined the Irish Guards.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 21st September 1914.

Joseph Reid was a Private in the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, when he Died Of Wounds, received in action, within Cambridge Hospital on the 20th February 1915, aged 30 years

News has been received that Private Joseph Reid, 1st Battalion Irish Guards, died in Cambridge Hospital on February 20 of wounds received in action. Prior to being called up on reserve deceased was a member of the West Belfast Regiment U.V.F, and was employed at Queens Island. He leaves a wife and three children, who reside at 121 Argyle Street, Belfast.
