The 1901 Ireland Census has Samuel living at 164 Cupar Street, Belfast with his mother, occupation House Keeper, father, General Labourer, three brothers, George, 8 years, Thomas, 7 years, Edward, 2 years, and sister Mary Eliza, 10 years.

The 1911 Ireland Census has Samuel living at 1 Urney Street, Shankill Road Belfast with his mother, brothers, George, Machine Hand at Foundry, Thomas, Factory Hand at Foundry, Edward, and his sister, Mary Eliza Hill, nee Swain, Ruler at Spinning Mill. His brother in law, Samuel Hill, Machine Hand is also registered as living there. Samuels occupation at this time is given as Machine Hand at Foundry.

Samuel signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day.

He was a member of the West Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force.

Samuel joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 2nd of October 1915.

Samuel Swain was a Private in 107th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) when he, whilst in hospital, was Killed In an Enemy Air Raid, on the 17th August 1917 aged 22 years.

A local newspaper states.

Gunner Samuel Swain, Machine Gun Corps, died of wounds, was a son of Mr George Swain, 1 Urney Street. He was employed in Workman, Clarks Engine Works, and was in the West Belfast U.V.F. His brother George of the Ulster Division, was killed earlier in the war.

Samuels Soldiers Effects were left to his father.

A Will, signed Samuel Swain B Company, No 5 Platoon, 107th Brigade 36th Ulster Division, and dated 6th of October 1915, left his Property and Effects to his father.

A Pension Application Form shows Samuels father as claimant also.

He received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
