Service Records show us that John McGrogan had joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on the 6th of July 1912 and served as Private 2776. They also show that he attained a 3rd Class Education Certificate on the 1st of October 1912 while within it.
On the 15th of January John transferred into the Royal Field Artillery.
He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 19th of August 1914.
John was a Gunner in 124th Battery Royal Filed Artillery when he was Killed In Action at Le Cateau, France on the 26th of August 1914 aged 18 years

On the 10th of January 1915 a Memorandum was sent by Officer in charge of R.H.A, R.F.A Records at Woolwich Dockyard to the Officer Commanding 54th Brigade R.F.A Dundalk requesting if a Small Book belonging to John McGrogan had been found, the reply from Dundalk simply stated that there was no trace of it

Johns documents also show that his family must have moved house, from 6 Boyd Street, Belfast, as a letter sent from the Military to that address could not be located. Johns father then asked a local Police Station for help in tracking this letter down.
A Military letter dated the 7th of July 1919, and wrote to the Police Commissioner of Belfast, asked for help in locating Johns next of kin, as they could no longer be contacted at 6 Boyd Street, Belfast. A Sergeant H Kinkade from Brown Square R.I.C Barracks wrote back with their new address, 34 Stanhope Street

His family is connected to 30 Park Street, Belfast also.
