Robert joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on the 6th of February 1911.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 23rd August 1914.

Robert George Nicholl was a Lance Corporal in 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action on the 16th September 1914 in France aged 22 years

BELFAST CORPORAL KILLED.

Lance Corporal Robert Nicholl, of the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and of 183 Bellevue Street, Belfast, who is officially reported as having been killed in action on September 16. The deceased, who was just 22 years of age, joined the battalion tree years ago. He was promoted Lance Corporal some six months since, and had recently passed the examination for the rank of Corporal. He was stationed at the depot in Omagh when the war broke out and left for the front towards the end of August. Some time before he was killed he was slightly wounded in an engagement, but after three days treatment in the base hospital was able to return to the firing line. Much sympathy is extended to his mother and brothers in this their time of sorrow

A Pension Application Form shows his mother as claimant. It also shows that she had lived at 97 Lawnbrook Avenue and 14 Napier Street, Belfast.

Dependant Pension Application Forms show Roberts mother as claimant and that she now lived at Belfour Avenue, Whitehead, County Antrim

Robert received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star

He is Remembered at La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
