James had married Agnes Ruddock, Nee McIlwaine, on the 1st December 1908 within Trinity Church Belfast. They went on to have four children, their names and dates of birth are as follows: Thomas Grimason born 29th November 1909, Elizabeth born 12th November 1911, James born 5th of January 1913, John McIlwaine born 21st of September 1914

James was a member of Crimson Banner Loyal Orange Lodge 1116

James joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on 24th August 1914.

James was a sergeant in 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action near Le Cateau France on the 12th October 1914 aged 30 years

In addition to the list published yesterday of Belfast soldiers who had been killed at the front the following casualties have been reported to relatives in Belfast - Sergeant James Ruddock, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, a member of Crimson Banner L.O.L 1116, killed in action near Le Couteur

James Soldiers Effects were left to his widow Agnes.

His signed Will left his Property and Effects to his wife Agnes.

A Dependant Pension Application Form shows his wife and children as claimants, it also shows that James wife had remarried a Charles Edward Noble, 15040 Private Royal Marines Light Infantry on the 5th July 1916

James received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star

.

He is Remembered at Le Touret Memorial, France.
