Samuel joined the 43rd Battalion Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg on the 8th January 1915, before transferring to the 16th Battalion.

He sailed from Montreal to England aboard the S.S. Grampian on the 1st June 1915.

He was then posted as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force to France.

Samuel was a Private in 16th Battalion Canadian Infantry when he Died Of Wounds within No 2 Casualty Clearing Station on the 17th of August 1915 aged 24 years.

Mrs Sarah Murdock, 1 Cumberland Street, Belfast, has received official intimation that her brother Private Samuel Mills, 16th Batt Canadian Infantry (Canadian Scottish) has died of wounds received in action in France on August 17. Prior to going to Canada four years ago Private Mills was employed at Marsh's biscuit factory, and was a member of the North End Football Club. His brother is with the Ulster Division

Samuel received a War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.
