The 1901 Ireland Census has David living at 65 Hudson Street, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, occupation, Spreader, father, Ship Yard Labourer, three sisters, Margaret, 15 years, Flax Spinning Mill Spreader, Susannah, 8 years, Mary Ann, 1 year, and three brothers, Stephen, 11 years, George, 6 years, William, 3 years

The 1911 Ireland Census has David's family now living at 39 Bristol Street, Shankill, Belfast

David joined the Royal Navy on the 20th July 1908.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Acheron, HMS Vindictive, HMS Scylla, HMS Pembroke II, before ending on HMS Hawke.

David was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserves on the 20th July 1913, however he was recalled for service on the 5th August 1914.

David, aged 23 years, was a Stoker 1st Class within the Royal Navy when while serving aboard HMS Hawke he Drowned, Died At Sea, his ship having been attacked and sunk by a German Submarine, U 9, in the North Sea on the 15th of October 1914

Another sad aspect of this young man's life is the fact that his mother Susannah died on the 11th of November 1918, on what became known as Armistice Day, as the War To End All Wars, was brought to a close. She had given and lost three of her sons. His father then died on the 20th October 1921.

David received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star

.

He is Remembered at Chatham Naval Memorial, United Kingdom.
