Richard Simpson Smyth, son of William John and Lizzie Smyth, lived at 48 Downing Street, Shankill Road, Belfast

Richard joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 28th December 1914.

Richard was a Rifleman in 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he Died Of Wounds Received In Action within No 8 Clearing Hospital, Boulogne on the 24th April 1915 aged 20 years, 5 days after his birthday.

A local newspaper states.

News is to hand that Rifleman Richard S Smyth, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, died of wounds on the 24th ult, in No 8 Clearing Hospital Boulogne. Prior to enlisting at the outbreak deceased was employed at Reid MacFarlane's Pipe and Boiler works. His uncle, Private George Smyth, who belonged to the Royal Irish Rifles, was killed in action last December, and another uncle is at present ho0me wounded. The father of the deceased is with the 9th Royal Irish Rifles at Ballykinlar, and an uncle is with the 17th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles at Newcastle. His mother resides at 48 Downing Street, Belfast

Richard had lost his uncle, 9001 Rifleman George Smyth 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles who Died of Wounds received in action on the 30th December 1914, and who is buried within the Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France. His uncle George lived at 5 Wensley Street Belfast with his wife Elizabeth and son John.
