John joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 13th August 1914.

John was a Rifleman in D Company 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he Died of Wounds received near Le Cateau France on the 15th October 1914

Official notification has been received that Private John Smith, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, has died of wounds received in action. He had 18 years serve, twelve of which were spent in India and three at Victoria Barracks, Belfast. His parents reside at 8 Kildare Street, Belfast

Johns Soldiers Effects were left to a James Mahood, Patrick Fleming, two sister Susan and Sarah Scott and a Mrs Jane Burns.

His Will signed and dated 6th August 1914 left his Property and Effects to a Mrs Jane Burns also.

A Pension Application Forms shows his mother Margaret as claimant.

Dependant Pension Application Forms also show his mother Margaret as claimant.

These documents also show another Soldier within them, an Archibald McCartney, with Margaret described as his mother also
