The 1901 Ireland Census has John living at 6 Sidney Street West, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, three sisters, Jane, 17 years, occupation, Layer Linen, Mary Theresa, 15 years, Layer Linen, Christina, 13 years, Doffer Linen, two brothers, Samuel David, 8 years, and Thomas James, under 1 year.

Johns father had died on the 17th November 1899

The Census Of England and Wales, 1911, Enumeration Book For The Royal Navy had John registered at Chatham Royal Naval Barracks

.

John joined the Royal Navy on the 25th October 1907.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Acheron, HMS Blake, HMS Pembroke II, HMS Lord Nelson, HMS Black Prince, HMS Actaeon, before ending on HMS Hawke.

John was transferred to Royal Fleet Reserves on the 27th October 1912, however he was recalled for service on the 5th August 1914.

John, aged 25 years, was a Stoker 1st Class within the Royal Navy when while serving aboard HMS Hawke he Drowned, Died At Sea, his ship having been attacked and sunk by a German Submarine, U 9, on the 15th of October 1914
