William Clarke, son of John and Sarah McConnell, lived at 26 Foreman Street, Shankill Road, Belfast

William joined the Royal Navy on the 15th April 1904.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Acheron, HMS Cumberland, HMS Pembroke II, HMS Bedford, HMS Andromeda, before ending on HMS Hawke. His Character throughout given as Very Good.

William joined the Royal Fleet Reserves on the 22nd May 1909, however he was recalled for service on the 5th August 1914.

William, aged 28 years, was a Stoker 1st Class within the Royal Navy when while serving aboard HMS Hawke he Drowned, Died At Sea, his ship having been attacked and sunk by a German Submarine, U 9, on the 15th of October 1914

Dependant Pension Application Forms show both his mother and father as claimants. On each form their names are given as McConnell, just as they are on his C.W.G.C Certificate, which was his mother's maiden name.

He is Remembered at Chatham Naval Memorial, United Kingdom.
