John Kelly, son of John and Margaret Kelly, lived at 9 Riversdale Street, Shankill, Belfast

Prior to enlistment John had served 8 years as a Driver within the Royal Filed Artillery

John joined the C.E.F at Ottawa, Ontario on the 24th August 1914.

He left Quebec for Plymouth aboard the S.S Royal George on the 3rd October 1914.

On the 20th December 1914 John embarked to France from Southampton.

John was a Private in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (East Ontario Regiment), when he was Killed In Action on the 8th May 1915 aged 33 years

The Canadian Record Office notifies that Private John Kelly, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was killed in action on the 8th inst. Deceased completed his time with the Royal Field Artillery, serving a number of years in India, and he was also engaged at the Boar War. He left Belfast for Canada about three years ago, and enlisted there at the outbreak of war. His parents reside at 9 Riverdale Street, Belfast

Mr and Mrs Kelly 9 Riverdale Street, Belfast, who, as already reported, have sustained a sever loss by the death of their son Private John Kelly, Princess Patricia's C.L.I., killed in action on May 8, have received the following letter from Major-General S Hughes, Minister Of Militia, Canada:- Will you kindly accept my sincere sympathy and condolences in the loss of your splendid son. While one cannot too deeply mourn the loss of such a brave soldier, there is a consolation in knowing that he did his duty fearlessly and well, and gave up his life for the cause of liberty and the up building of the Empire

.

John received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
