He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 23rd August 1914.

John was a Private in 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action on the 6th August 1917 aged 42 years.

It is officially reported that Bandsman John (Jack) Tracey, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. brother of Mrs Campbell, 108 Palmer Street, Belfast, was killed in action on the 6th August. He had 25 years service with the Army, and was in possession of the God Conduct Medal. He was the youngest son of the late Mrs Tracey, District Nurse Monaghan. Bandsman Tracey had formerly served with the Irish Guards, and had been in the Army since he was 15 years of age
