Samuel was a Rifleman in C Company 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action on the 9th May 1915 aged 26 years

Samuel Soldiers Effects were left to his mother.

His Will, signed and dated the 31st December 1914, states the following, In the event of my death I give the whole of my property and effects to my mother Eliza Jane Mahaffey, 69 Urney Street, Belfast.

A Pension Application Form shows his mother as claimant.

Dependant Pension Application Forms show his mother as claimant for him and a brother, 19497 Private Henry Mahaffey 7th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

His brother, 6094 Rifleman Henry Mahaffey, had served within the Royal Irish Rifles Special Reserves from 28th May 1908 to 27th May 1914.

Samuel received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
