Deceased had three years service, and at the outbreak of war was stationed with the 2nd Battalion at Dover, leaving there last August for France, and relieving wounds at the retreat from Mons. There is slight confusion around Williams Place of Birth, with the Ireland Memorial giving it as Shankill Road, Belfast, but the Irish Census giving it as County Tipperary.

S.A.S.H believe this to be due to circumstances at this time, with his address at time of death being taken and used as Place of Birth on Irelands Memorial Book.

William received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star.
