The 1911 Ireland Census has Thomas living at 75 Charleville Street, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, father, Registration Agent, four brothers, John James, 22 years, General Labourer, Andrew, 18 years, General Labourer, Alfred Ernest, 15 years, Samuel, 8 years, and two sisters, Letitia, 17 years, Weaver In Factory, Emma, 10 years

Thomas joined the Royal Irish Rifles on the 8th August 1915 serving as 6152 Rifleman T Stewart.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force.

On the 22nd July 1916 he transferred into the Machine Gun Corps.

Thomas was appointed Unpaid Acting Lance Corporal on the 10th February 1917, before being appointed Paid Acting Lance Corporal on the 17th August 1917.

On the 2nd November 1917 he was appointed 137th Company Lance Corporal.

Thomas was a Corporal in 46th Battalion Machine Gun Corps, Infantry, when he was Killed In Action on the 24th September 1918 aged 20 years

STEWART, Cpl Thomas Stewart, Machine Gun Corps, killed. He is the third son of Mrs Stewart, 59 Canmore Street, Belfast, who has made the supreme sacrifice. Two other brothers are still serving

.

Service records show that Thomas was admitted to hospital on two occasions. A Clinical Medical Chart shows that on one occasion he was admitted to Belfast Military Hospital suffering from appendicitis on the 5th September 1917, and stayed until the 26th September 1917. Both times he was returned to Regiment due to being fit for service

His Will, signed and dated 4th August 1916 stated the following, In the event of my death I give the whole of my Property and effects to my mother, Mrs Mary Jane Stewart, 59 Canmore Street, Shankill Road, Belfast, Ireland.

Dependant Pension Application Forms show his mother as claimant for himself and brother Alfred

Thomas received the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

He is Remembered at Bellicourt British Cemetery, France.
