John signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day within Westminster London.

John Sales married Dorothy Georgina Sales, Nee Kerr, on the 22nd March 1913 within Saint Andrews Church of England Church, Fulham, London.

They went on to have daughter Margaret Dorothy Sales on the 4th August 1913, she was baptised within Saint Augustine's Fulham, London, on the 14th January 1914.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 5th of October 1915.

John Sales was a Sergeant in 1st Battalion Irish Guards when he was Killed In Action on the 18th May 1915 aged 27 years

A local newspaper states.

BELFAST GUARDSMAN KILLED.

It is officially reported that Sergeant John Sales, 1st Batt, Irish Guards, was killed in action on May 18. Sergt Sales was reported missing on that date, but his parents, who live at 18 March Street, Belfast, have now been informed by the War Office that he is dead, and his name appears in the casualty list issued last evening with thirteen of his comrades, including Lance Sergeant E.P.W
