The 1901 Ireland Census has Edmund living at 19 Tenth Street, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, occupation, House Keeper, father, Engine Driver, three brothers, Benjamin, 21 years, Apprentice Fitter, Campbell, 10 years, William, 8 years, and two sisters, Margaret, 7 years, Martha, 4 years. A Mary Dillon, 41 years, is registered as a boarder also. Edmunds occupation at this time is given as Smith Apprentice.

The 1911 Ireland Census has Edmund living at 19 Tenth Street, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, father, occupation, Engine Fireman At Weaving Factory, two brothers, Campbell, 20 years, Apprentice Hackle Setter, William, 18 years, Apprentice Plumber, and two sisters, Margaret, 17 years, Linen Yarn Winder In Factory, Martha, 14 years, Linen Yarn Winder In Factory. A Mary Dillon, 45 years, Linen Yarn Reeler at Spinning Mill, is also registered as a boarder within the house. Edmunds occupation at this time is given as Engine Fireman At Weaving Factory

Edmund had married Margaret Rainey, Nee McCreight, on the 28th December 1902 in Trinity Church of Ireland Church, Belfast.

They went on to have two children, their names and dates of births are as follows, Joseph Rainey born 29th April 1904, Shankill, Belfast, Catherine McCreight Rainey born 7th June 1906 Shankill, Belfast.

Sadly Edmunds wife Margaret and their mother died of Leukaemia on the 5th November 1909.

Edmund signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day at Kilroot Orange Hall Carrickfergus.

Ulster Steamship Company Limited, Cheyn and Sons, Belfast Managers, Headed Paper with the S.S. Inishowen Head, Cardiff, 30th September 1912 wrote on the opposite side, states: the undersigned not having had an opportunity of signing the Ulster Covenant here owing to forms being sent to the Conservative Club, James Street, Cardiff. We respectfully append our signatures.

Edmund joined the Royal Highlanders of Canada on the 25th September 1914, at Valcartier, Canada.

He left Quebec aboard the S.S Alaunia on the 4th October 1914.

Edmund was a Private in 13th Battalion Canadian Infantry when he Died Of Wounds within No 2 Canadian Filed Ambulance on the 22nd May 1915 aged 31 years

Private Edward Rainey, 13th Battalion Canadian Highhland4rs, was killed in action on May 22. Deceased was the second son of Mr Joseph Rainey, 49 Tenth Street, Belfast, and enlisted with the first Canadian contingent. His wife is dead, and he leaves two small children

A Service Record show his father as claimant for both grandchildren, described as orphaned children.

Edmund received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Hinges Military Cemetery, France.
