The 1901 Ireland Census has Joseph living at 29 Upper Glenfarne Street, Shankill, Belfast with his mother, occupation, House Keeper, father, General Labourer, sister, Esther, 22 years, Linen Weaver, and brother, Thomas, 20 years, Sawer. A Esther Heatly, 4 years, is registered as a guest within the house. Josephs, aged 13 years, occupation at this time is given as Message Boy

Joseph had married Josephine Elizabeth Barr, Nee McAllister on the 6th July 1913 within Holy Trinity Church of Ireland Church, Belfast

Joseph joined the Royal Navy on the 23rd July 1909 for 5 years plus 7 years Special Service.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Acheron, HMS Cressy, HMS Implacable, HMS King Edward III, HMS Pembroke II, until he transferred to Royal Fleet Reserves on the 19th July 1914.

On the 17th September 1914 he enrolled in to the Royal Naval Division's Hood Battalion.

Joseph was a Stoker 1st Class within Hood Battalion Royal Navy when he was Killed In Action at the Dardanelles on the 27th May 1915 aged 27 years

Mrs Barr, 46 Sancroft Street, Belfast, has been officially notified that her husband, Stoker J Barr, Royal Fleet Reserve, has been killed in action at the Dardanelles, while serving with the Hood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. Deceased was the youngest son of the late James and Mary Ann Barr, of this city, and was formerly a stoker on the battleship King Edward VII. He was a brother of Rifleman Thomas Barr, 6th Royal Irish Rifles, and a brother in law of Private Thomas Cheshire, the same regiment, and of Private Phillip Heatley, of the Seaforth Highlanders

A local newspaper memorial also shows two brother in laws as serving , Rifleman Thomas Cheshire R.I.R, and Lance Corporal Phillip Heatley Seaforth Highlanders, along with nephew Lance Corporal Thomas Heatley Seaforth Highlanders too.

His GWGC Records show that the officiating Chaplain, B Close, carried out the religious service.

There is also Special Memorial within the graveyard dedicated to Joseph and the epitaph reads, Their Glory Shall Not Be Blotted Out, which was chosen by his widow Josephine.

Dependant Pension Application Forms show both his mother, address given as 11 Lee Street, Old Park Road, Belfast, and his wife as claimants. His wife is later connected to 18 Walbeck Street, Belfast.
