William was a Private in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action on the 9th June 1915 aged 24 years.

A local newspaper states.
Official intimation has been received that Private Wm McGucken, 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, was killed in action in France on the 9th inst. Deceased enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war, prior to which he was employed as a riveter at the Queens Island. He left for the front on 1st June, and was only two days in the trenches when he was killed. He was the third son of the late Hugh McGucken, and his relatives reside at 96 M'Tier Street, Belfast
