The 1901 Ireland Census has Samuel living at 11 Crosby Street, Belfast with his mother, occupation, Spreader Flax in Mill, father, Van Driver House Furniture, two brothers, William John, 10 years, Ernest, 5 years, and sister Edith, under 1 year. Samuel grandmother also lived within the house, Mrs Agnes Turner, 74 years, a House Keeper

The 1911 Ireland Census has Samuel living at 11 Crosby Street, Belfast with his mother, occupation, Spreader Flax in Mill, father, Van Man, two brothers, William John, 20 years, General Labourer, Ernest, 15 years, Message Boy, and sister Edith, 10 years. Samuel grandmother also lived within the house, Mrs Agnes Turner, 84 years, Invalid. Samuels occupation at this time is given as General Labourer

Samuel signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day within Belfast City Hall

.

Samuel joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 25th May 1915.

Samuel was a Private in 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action on the 19th June 1915 aged 22 years.

Mr William Arnold, 11, Crosby Street, Belfast, has been notified that his second son, Private Samuel Arnold (4598), 1st Batt, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, has been killed in action at the Dardanelles. Deceased was Twenty-Two years of age, and prior to the war was employed in a local laundry. His brother John is serving with the Royal Field Artillery in France

Samuels Soldiers Effects were left to his mother.

His Will, signed and dated the 24th May 1915 states the following, In the event of my death I give all my property to my mother, Mrs Agnes Arnold 11 Crosby Street, Shankill Road, Belfast.

A Pension Application Form shows his mother as claimant, her address at time of applying is given as 10 Kendal Street, Belfast.

Dependant Pension Application Forms show his mother as claimant also, her address is given as 76 Ottawa St. There must have been slight confusion though as Belfast is scribbled out and Canada wrote, however this address is in fact within the Shankill Area.

Samuel received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Turkey.
