A letter from his father John Hamilton, 5 Courtrai Street, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, dated 24th August 1915 to the Officer Commanding Intermediate Base, Australian Imp Force, Cairo, Egypt shows the following, Sir, I have received notification from the High Commissioner Commonwealth of Australia (Military Records Branch) that my son, 1560 Sergeant John Hamilton, 9th Bn, Australian Imperial Force, was killed in action on 28th June 1915 at Gaba Tepe, Dardanelles. In it he said he had no information as to the immediate circumstances connected with his death, but suggested writing to you for first hand particulars and a statement of any instructions there might be with reference to the disposal of any effects my son may have left.

I would feel very grateful to you for the information referred to above. I am also grateful for the sympathetic messages from the High Commissioner and one enclosed with it from Lord Kitchener on behalf of their gracious Majesties, the King and Queen.

I am, Sir, yours faithfully.

John Hamilton.

Note.

My present address in Belfast is as above but my address when my boy left home 14 years ago was 3 Arkwright Street, Belfast. It was to the latter the High Commissioners letter came. This former address was evidently the one given by my son when joining. He has not been writing to me for many years, thus was not aware of my change of address.

There is a reply within Johns profile, though parts are difficult to decipher
