Mrs Catherwood, 30 Hopewell Street, has received additional details of the death of her husband, Private Joseph Catherwood, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. After a sharp action in the trenches on the 11th July last he was out with a burying party when a Jack Johnston shell mortally wounded him. He served for some years in the 21st Lancers, and took part in the campaigning in South Africa, Egypt and India. He went through these without a scratch. Before the war he was employed at messrs Combe Barbour Combe, and was a member of Albert Hall, Shankill Road..

Attestation Papers show that Joseph Catherwood, aged 39 years, joined the Royal Irish Rifle Reserve(Special Reservists) on the 19th August 1914 and his address at this time was 37 Christopher Street, Belfast. These records show he married Sarah Catherwood, Nee Brown, in Ottawa Canada on the 20th December 1907 by a Rev H R Reid, and that his daughters were all born in Ottawa, Canada.

A letter from within the same Papers sent from the Infantry Record Office Island Bridge Dublin to the Soldiers And Sailors, Malvern Street, Belfast War Pension Committee, inquires and asks for confirmation concerning a Marriage Certificate relating to Joseph Catherwood.

Another letter addressed Secretary War Office Park Buildings St James Park S.W, from a Rev Montgomery states that Marriage Certificates and Birth Certificates for children are not obtainable.

His Soldiers Effects were left to his widow.

Josephs Will stated the following, I the said Joseph Catherwood leaves all my money and property to my daughter Josephine Catherwood, No 30 Hopewell Street, Belfast Ireland, if living if not living I leave it to Mary Catherwood same address and my daughter and God Bless them all Dady

A Pension Application Form shows his unmarried wife as claimant. This documents also shows that she now lived in Glennyhorn, Clontibret, Monaghan

Dependant Pension Application Forms show his Unmarried wife as claimant for herself and three children, their names and dates of births are the following, Mary Catherwood born 19th July 1907, Josephine Catherwood born 19th December 1908, Martha Catherwood born 19th November 1911.

Joseph received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star.

He is Remembered at Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.
