Joseph joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry on the 17th September 1914.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 9th May 1915, joining his Battalion at Cape Helles on the 30th May 1915.

Joseph was a Private in the Plymouth Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Marine Light Infantry when he Died of Wounds on the 14th July 1915 aged 19 years.

Mrs Paul, 28 Derry Street, Belfast, has been notified of the death of her son Joseph, who was serving with the Royal Marines at the Dardanelles, the result of wounds received in action on July 13th. Mrs Paul also received news that her sons companion, Private James Morrison, Royal Marines, died of wounds received on the same date. Both died in hospital at Alexandria. Prior to enlisting they were employed at Messrs Combe Barbour's
