Robert had married Matilda Dalzell, Nee McIlhagga, on the 26th September 1903 within Trinity Church of Ireland Church Belfast.

They went on to have four children, their names and dates of births are the following, Robert James born 8th March 1905, Mary born 29th September 1909, Agnes born 21st Agust1911, Ellen born 21st August 1912

Robert joined the Royal Naval Reserves on the 22nd October 1904.

His address at the time of enlistment is 18 Esmond Street, Shankill, Belfast, his Service records showing he worked at Albert Foundry, Harland and Wolff, and Mackies as a Fireman throughout.

He served aboard H.M.S Fire Queen, H.M.S Royal Oak, H.M.S Russell and H.M.S Narcissus.

He was recalled on the 28th August 1914.

Robert was a Stoker aboard H.M.S Lancaster, Royal Naval Reserves, when he was found Dead aboard his ship on the 23rd July 1915 aged 40 years.

His Dependant Pension Application Forms show his widow, who had remarried a soldier, George Shaw, on the 28th November 1916, as claimant for herself and their four children.

Robert received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.
