John Kearney, son of James and Ellen Kearney, lived with his wife and children at 4 Leginn Street, Belfast

John Kearney married Annie Kearney, Nee Prendergast, within Ligoniel Chapel, Roman Catholic Church, on the 4th of October 1911.

They went on to have children, the names and dates of births of two of those children are as follows, John Patrick born 5th March 1913, Thomas born 3rd of June 1914.

John joined the Royal Irish Rilfes.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 5th of October 1915.

John was a Rifleman in 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action on the 1st August 1915

A local newspaper states.

Mrs Kearney, 4 Leginn Street, Ligoniel, has been notified that her husband, Private John Kearney, (5645), 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, was killed in Flanders on 1st inst. He leaves four children.

Johns Soldiers Effects were left to his widow Annie, who by the time of applying had remarried a William Carberry on the 22nd May 1919.

Dependant Pension Application Forms shows his widow and a Miss Sarah Prendergast, described as a Guardian, as claimants.

John received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
