He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: H.M.S Black Prince, H.M.S Minotaur, H.M.S Agincourt, H.M.S Defiance, H.M.S Vivid I, H.M.S Andromeda, H.M.S Amphitrite, H.M.S Cambridge, H.M.S Skipjack, H.M.S Emerald, H.M.S Hebe, H.M.S Carnarvon, before ending on H.M.S Indefatigable.

John was an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S Indefatigable within the Royal Navy when he Died, Haemorrhaging into his Pancreas, on 2nd August 1915 aboard his ship aged 29 years
