The 1901 Ireland Census has Edward living at 64 Sultan Street, Belfast, with his mother, occupation, Spinner Flax, father, Baker, two sisters, Maria, 18 years, Spinner Flax, Sarah Jane,11 years, and a brother, Patrick, 5 years

Edward joined the Royal Garrison Artillery on the17th September 1908.

He was posted to Jamaica on the 17th November 1909, returning home again on the 28th January 1912.

He was then reposted to Malta on the 14th March 1913, returning home again on the 21st June 1915.

Finally he was posted again as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 26th June 1915.

Edward was a Gunner 99th Company Royal Garrison Artillery when he was Killed In Action on the 3rd August 1915 aged 28 years, and having served 6 years 321 days

A local newspaper states.

Intimation was received yesterday that Gunner Edward McCoo, Royal Garrison Artillery, was killed in action on the 3rd inst, at the Dardanelles. Deceased, who had six years service, was stationed at Malta prior to leaving for Turkey. A younger brother is serving with the Cameron Highlanders somewhere in France. Their sister, Mrs McClean, resides at 47 Hartley Street, Belfast.

A Service Record dated the 17th September 1908 shows that a Mr Kelly, 53 Raglan Street, Belfast signed as his character reference, doing so having met and worked with Edward within Bernard Hughes Bakery, Springfield Road, Belfast.

Edwards Soldiers Effects were left to his mother, half sisters, Maggie Armstrong, Mary Lowe, brothers Patrick and John, sister Jennie McClean.
