He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 22nd July 1915.

Robert was a Lance Corporal in 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action on the 8th of August 1915 aged 20 years.

News has been received of the death in action of two brothers named Lance Corporal Robert M'Ateer and Private David M'Ateer. The first-named who was twenty years of age, belonged to the R.I.R, and had been missing at Chocolate Hill since August last, but now he is officially returned as killed. David, who was serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, was killed on the 10th inst. He was twenty-three years of age. A third brother is serving at Ballykinlar. Their only sister is employed at Clanbrassil Marino.
