David joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 3rd of May 1915.

David was a Private in 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action on the 10th July 1916 aged 23 years

News has been received of the death in action of two brothers named Lance Corporal Robert McAteer and Private David McAteer. The first-named who was twenty years of age, belonged to the R.I.R, and had been missing at Chocolate Hill since August last, but now he is officially returned as killed. David, who was serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, was killed on the 10th inst. He was twenty-three years of age. A third brother is serving at Ballykinlar. Their only sister is employed at Clanbrassil Marino.
