Official intimation has been received that No 2978, Private Wm Henry Thompson, 6th Batt, Royal Munster Fusiliers, has been killed in action at the Dardanelles, on August 9th. Deceased, who was just 19 years of age, enlisted about 10 months ago. In January last he was home on 7 days leave, and in June was sent with his battalion to the Dardanelles. He was the son of William Henry and Mary Thompson, Greenwell Street, Newtownards, and grandson of Robert McCullough, Movilla Street, Newtownards

Official intimation is to hand that Private William Henry Thompson, 6th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August 9th. Deceased who was 19 years of age, was a native of Newtownards. His sister resides at 2 Matlock Street, Belfast

Williams Medal Index Card shows that he was transferred into the Labour Corps, serving as Private 489020 William H Thompson.

His World War I Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920, hold no mention of his death, with one in fact showing that he was discharged Class Z on the 24th May 1919.

William is not within the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site also

There is some confusion around William Henry Thompson, however he is commemorated within Saint Marks Church Of Ireland Church, Newtownards, and in within the Journey of Remembrance, Belfast Book of Honour, and so S.A.S.H believe he should be recognised and remembered within the Shankill Great War site also until a definitive outcome is found.
