William joined the Royal Irish Rilfes.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 12th July 1915.

William was a Rifleman in 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action on the 11th August 1915 age 19 years.

Missing at the Dardanelles since August 11 1915, Pte William Carmichael, Royal Irish Rifles, has now been returned by the War Office as having been killed on that date. He was a member of the North Belfast Regiment, U.V.F, Queen Victoria Memorial L.O.L, and prior to enlistment was employed at Brookfield Spinning Mill

Private Andrew W Carmichael, Canadian Rifles, and Private William Carmichael, Royal Irish Rifles, two brothers, have both fallen in action. Andrew has died of wounds, and William was previously reported missing at the Dardanelles, but is now officially presumed to have been killed. Their mother resides at 2 Bracken Street, Belfast
