Alexander married Rebecca Johnston, Nee McMahan, within Christ Church, Church Of Ireland, Church, Belfast on the 25th January 1914

Alexander joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 11th July 1915.

Alexander was a Rifleman in 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he Died on the 15th/22nd August 1915 aged 22 years.

Royal Irish Rifles.

Official intimation is to hand that Rifleman Alex Johnston, 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, has been killed on active service at the Dardanelles on 15th August. Prior to enlisting, deceased, who has two brothers serving with the colours, was employed at Messrs, Workman, Clark And Co's. His wife resides at 27 North Boundary Street, Belfast.

Alexander's Soldiers Effects were left to his widow.

His Will, signed and dated 4th April 1915 stated the following, In the event of my death I gave the whole of my property and effects to my wife Mrs R Johnston, N 113 Canmore Street, Belfast. This will was wrote whilst in Curragh Camp, Ireland.

A Pension Application Form shows his widow as claimant.

His Dependant Pension Application Form shows his widow as claimant, also that she had remarried a Barnard Doyle, a soldier within the Royal Irish Fusiliers, on the 26th August 1916. This document also states that Alexander was Killed by bomb explosion whilst on active service.

Alexander received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915 Star.

He is Remembered at Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
