John Yates, son of Thomas and Annie Yates, lived with his wife Elizabeth at 25 Springmount Street, Shankill Road, Belfast

.

John had married Elizabeth Yates, Nee Haire, on the 16th of November 1912. They went on the have their daughter Annie on the 17th November 1912

.

John was a member of the Orange Order, Crystal Spring Lodge 905

.

John joined the Royal Navy on the 15th February 1904.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Acheron, HMS Kent, HMS Pembroke II, HMS Tyne, HMS Charybdis, before ending on HMS Hawke. His Character throughout his service is given as Very Good.

John was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserves on the 16th February 1909, however he was recalled for service on the 5th August 1914.

John, aged 30 years, was a Stoker 1st Class within the Royal Navy when while serving aboard HMS Hawke he Drowned, Died At Sea, his ship having been attacked and sunk by a German Submarine, U 9, in the North Sea on the 15th of October 1914

A Naval Pension To Widows Of Men Whose Death Is Attributable To War like Operations Book shows his wife and child as claimants. It also shows that his wife had remarried an Albert Dowie on the 26th January 1918, and that her address is given at the time of applying for his pension as Bedworth, Nuneaton, England.
