He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 8th of September 1914.

William was a Private within 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment when he was Killed In Action in France on the 20th October 1914 aged 19 years

Mrs Craig, 10 Mountjoy Street, Belfast, has been officially notified that her son, Private William Craig, 2nd Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment, has been killed in action at Neuve Chapelle. Prior to joining the army the deceased was employed by the New Northern Spinning Company

Another states.

Mrs L Craig, 10 Mountjoy Street, Belfast, has been officially notified that her son, Private Wm Craig, was killed in action on October 20 at Neuve Chapelle, where so many of the gallant Royal Irish Rifles fell

His Will, signed and dated 19th September 1914, left everything to his mother.
