Robert signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day, within Belfast City Hall

Robert joined the Royal Irish Rifles.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 13th of August 1914.

Robert was a Lance Corporal in 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action in France aged 27 years
