William had married Gertrude Pattenden, Nee Collins, on the 15th December 1909 within the Albert Hall, Church Of Ireland, Shankill Road, the Marriage Officiated by the Rev Henry Montgomery. They went on to have a son, William Harold Pattenden born 20th of August 1914.

William joined the Royal Sussex Regiment.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 12th of September 1914.

William was a Private in 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment when he was Killed In Action on the 31st October 1914 in France aged 31 years

Mrs Pattenden of 13 Third Avenue, Belfast, has been notified by the War Office that her husband, Sergeant Pattenden, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, previously reported missing, was killed in action at Ypres on 31st October 1914. Previous to being called up on the reserve he was employed as porter and caretaker in the Northern Bank (head office), Victoria Street, Belfast

William Soldiers Effects were left to his widow.

A Dependant Pension Application Form shows his widow as claimant. However it then shows that his wife had died on the 13th August 1916 and that his mother, the Childs Grandmother, was now the Guardian and claimant.

By this time Williams wife was living at 92 Cambrai Street, Shankill Road, Belfast.

William received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914 Star

He is Remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
