Samuel James Dickson joined the Royal Navy on the 19th April 1912 for a period of 12 years.

He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Impregnable, HMS King Alfred, HMA Isis, HMS Vivid I, HMS Gibraltar, HMS Cambrian, HMS Pegasus, HMS Donegal, HMS Highflyer, before ending on HMS Monmouth. His Character throughout his service is given as Very Good.

Samuel was an Able Seaman within the Royal Navy when while serving aboard HMS Monmouth he Drowned, Lost At Sea, on the 1st November 1914 aged 20 years. His ship, HMS Monmouth was involved in the Battle of Coronel, and it was during this action his ship was attacked and hit by the German Ship SMS Gneisenau first, it was then attacked by SMS Nurnberg and sunk off the Coast of Chile
