The 1911 Ireland Census had Samuelliving at 23 Mayo Street, Shankill Road, Belfast with his wife Catherine, occupation, Linen Weaver, and son Samuel, aged 9 years. Samuels occupation at this time is given as Fireman On Steam Ship, Unemployed

Samuel had married Catherine Ferris, Nee Ramsey, on the 1st November 1909 within Saint Luke's Church, Belfast

Samuel was a member of the Orange Order, St Luke's Defenders L.O.L 1911

Militia Attestation Papers show Samuel joined the 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles on the 8th March 1889.

On the 22nd March 1890 he was then transferred to the Regular Army, 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.

Samuel was then transferred to Army Reserves before being Discharged, due to having served his Duration of Engagement.

Samuel reenlisted into the Royal Irish Rifles on the 22nd August 1914.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 9th September 1914.

Samuel was a Rifleman in 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles when he was Killed In Action near Gheluvelt, Belgium on the 11th of November 1914 aged 40 years

Mrs Catherine Ferris, 37 Mayo Street, Belfast, has been notified that her husband, Rifleman Samuel Ferris, 2nd Battalion, R.I.R, was killed in action on 11th November. He was formerly employed on the Queens Island, and although a time expired reservist, he volunteered on the outbreak of the war, and was accepted for his old regiment

He is Remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
