He served on a number of ships throughout his career, including the following: HMS Northampton, HMS Cleopatra, HMS Victory, HMS Vernon, HMS Firequeen I, HMS Terrible, HMS Good Hope, HMS Viceroy II, HMS Canopus, HMS Albion, HMS Emerald, HMS Inflexible, HMS Prince George, HMS Swiftsure, HMS Minerva II, HMS Dido, HMS Attentive, HMS Victory II, before ending on HMS Ardent.

William, aged 29 years, was a 1st Class Stoker aboard HMS Ardent within the Royal Navy when he accidently drowned, Died 2nd February 1915, and was found at Stranraer Harbour
