The 1901 Ireland Census has James living at 1.2 Lower Urney Street, Belfast with his mother, occupation, Flax Spinner In Mill, father, General Labourer, three brothers, William Robert, under 1 year, John, 3 years, Edward Faulby, 2 years

James mother sadly died on the 22nd January 1904. His brother William followed, dying on the 3rd May 1911 aged 10 years.

The 1911 Ireland Census has his brothers John and Edward registered as living within Balmoral Industrial Boarding School

James joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

He was posted as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 17th March 1915.

James was a Lance Corporal in Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was Killed In Action at the Dardanelles, Gallipoli, on the 26th April 1915 aged 19 years

Lance Corporal James McCalmont, 1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, killed on 10th inst, at the Dardanelle, was the eldest son of Mr John McCalmont, 12 Parker Street, Whiteinch, formerly of Belfast. He was the nephew of Mr Harry McCalmont, 61 Woodvale Street, Belfast
